US 378 Sunset Split

Project Alternatives

Project Alternatives

The project team came up with a number of potential alternatives to address the purpose and need for the project. These project alternatives were all meant to address long wait times and congestion at the Corley Mill/US 378 (Sunset Boulevard) intersection. Each alternative was evaluated based on environmental impacts, current traffic times/wait times and predicted traffic times/wait times.

Alternative 1

Proposal
Widen US 378/Sunset Boulevard to 8 lanes
Add two additional lanes in each direction

Evaluation
Significant right-of-way impacts
Would not improve overall wait times

Result
Eliminated from consideration

Alternative 2

Alternative 2 consisted of the same concept but was developed using two configurations, 2A and 2B. Both would remove traffic from Corley Mill Road to relieve congestion and wait times at the US 378/Sunset Boulevard/Ginny Lane intersection yet tie in to US 378 at different locations.

Alternative 2A

Proposal
Widen US 378/Sunset Boulevard to six lanes
Relocate Corley Mill Road traffic to two new intersections on US 378

Evaluation
Does not alleviate US 378 traffic or improve wait times

Result
Eliminated from further consideration

Alternative 2B

Proposal
Widen US 378 to six lanes
Relocate Corley Mill Road traffic to one new intersection on US 378

Evaluation
Does not alleviate US 378 traffic or improve wait times

Result
Eliminated from further consideration

Alternative 3

Proposal
Relocate left turning movement off of Corley Mill Road using a roundabout to new intersection at US 378 (R1)
Relocate right turning movement off of Corley Mill Road using a roundabout to Northside Boulevard at US 378 (M1)
Widen US 378 to six lanes

Evaluation
Does not alleviate US 378 traffic or improve wait times
Adds to congestion on Northside Boulevard

Result
Eliminated from further consideration

Alternative 4

Proposal
Relocate left turning movement off of Corley Mill Road using a roundabout to new intersection at US 378 (R1)
Relocate right turning movement off of Corley Mill Road using a roundabout to Northside Boulevard at US 378 (M1)
Make US 378 a Superstreet

Evaluation
Excessive right-of-way impacts

Result
Eliminated from further consideration

Alternative 5

Proposal
Keep the M1 connector for traffic traveling from Corley Mill Road
Widen us 378 to six lanes
Create a bypass for traffic traveling from Corley Mill Road to I-20

Evaluation
Bypass removes morning traffic from Corley Mill Road/US 378 intersection
Bypass alleviates traffic from US 378

Result
Bypass carried forward as part of the “Ultimate Corley Mill Gateway Project”
M1 connector eliminated from further consideration
US 378 widening eliminated from further consideration

Alternative 6

Proposal
Split eastbound and westbound traffic on US 378 into two separate sections
Reduce Corley Mill Road intersection signal phasing from 4 to 2

Evaluation
Adds lanes to US 378
Improves morning and afternoon traffic on US 378

Result
Sunset Split carried forward as part of the “Ultimate Corley Mill Gateway Project”

Alternative 7

Proposal
Combine the bypass with the Sunset Split to create the “Ultimate Corley Mill Gateway Project”

Evaluation
Most efficient distribution of traffic flow
Best result in overall level of service

Result
Creation of the “Ultimate Corley Mill Gateway Project”
